February Newsletter

February News

Hi! February is a very busy month with a lot of exciting activities planned.  We are wishing Mr. Zulian all the best as he retires on January 31st.  Our farewell celebration song is going to be an awesome way to say good bye.  There is a surprise assembly planned for Mr. Zulian on Wednesday, January 30 at 9:30 am. We are asking that the children try to wear either blue and white or a Leafs jersey/shirt (if they have one) to honour Mr. Zulian’s favourite hockey team.

New Principal

We are excited to welcome our new principal, Mr. Swales to the SCD family.  Mr. Swales will be with us until April.  We are looking forward to getting to know him better and sharing our wonderful school community with him.

Groundhog Day

Next week, we will be reading about groundhogs and folklore surrounding the furry rodents. We need to pick a name for our classroom groundhog puppet and are doing a prediction survey in our classroom. Will there be six more weeks of winter? We will have to wait and see!

Candy grams

The WE Social Justice Club of SCD are selling candy grams for the next week. These are little sweets that your child can order and have sent to classmates or siblings. The cost is one for .50¢ or three for $1.00.  The proceeds from the candy grams will go to the support local social justice initiatives decided upon by the students. If you would like to have your child order some candy grams, please send money in a bag labeled with their name and a list of the names of children that they wish to send them to. The candy grams will be delivered to classrooms on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day

Just a reminder that if your child would like to bring in Valentine cards for his/her classmates, to please notaddress them to specific students, but “to my friend” and sign their name on them.

Donations Requested

Later this month, we would like to start an inquiry design challenge in our classroom about sleds.  We are looking for donations of small, clean plastic containers (rectangular shapes would work best, lids not necessary) to help our building project.  Containers will not be returned, so please don’t send us your best Tupperware! Thank you!

Spirit Week February 24-March 1

At SCD, we enjoy fun activities during Spirit Week to celebrate Sister Catherine Donnelly’s birthday on February 26th.  We start the week off by hosting Coffee Sunday at St. Mary’s Church after the 8:00 and 10:00 masses.  We will announce this year’s weekday activities as we draw closer to Spirit Week. On March 1st, all of the students from Sister Catherine Donnelly will be going to cheer on our school hockey team at East Bayfield Recreation Centre from 1:00 to 2:30. This year we will be playing the Monsignor Clair Crusaders hockey team.  Wear your blue and green clothes to support school spirit!

Home Reading Folders

We will start to send home green reading folders with our JK students this week.  There is a letter explaining how we use our reading folders and some handy tips for reading with your child.  All JK reading folders need to be returned to school every Wednesdayfor book exchange.  Just a reminder that SK students should be returning their green reading folders weeklyon the weekday written on the front of their folder.  Re-reading our little books builds confidence, comprehension and fluency.

Morning Arrival and Drop-off

Over the past month or so, we have been noticing a sharp increase in the number of students arriving late to class in the mornings. We understand that some things such as appointments can’t be helped and mornings are tough-especially in the winter, but we are asking for your help to improve the situation for the benefit of our students.  As a security measure, parents are not allowed to walk children to the classroom or come through the daycare to drop off at the classroom.  When children arrive late to school, office staff often have to walk them down to the classroom, thereby taking them away from their duties.  It also disrupts the morning routine in the classroom and the activities that the rest of the class are already engaged in.  We ask that parents please try to bring their child to school at least a few minutes before the 9:00 am bell (preferably at 8:45) and send them into the yard independently.  Parents are not to walk their children through the kindergarten yard to their classroom doors.  Thanks in advance for your help and understanding in this matter.

Remember that there will be no school on Friday, February 1 for the P.A. Day and Monday, February 18th for the Family Day holiday. Enjoy some quality family time! Please be sure to check our class calendar for all important dates.

Thank you!

Mrs. Sadlon and Mrs. Panico
