October News

Happy October!

Thank you to all of you who were able to come out to our Open House/Fun Fair. Mrs. Panico and I were very happy to chat with so many of you that evening.

Chappell Farm Trip

We are looking forward to our first school trip of the year to Chappell Farm tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who offered to volunteer, we are looking forward to a fun morning. Volunteers are reminded to please meet us at Chappell Farm at about 9:45 am, we have groups of children organized already.  Each child has been asked to choose their own pumpkin that they can carry themselves and any adults who wish to purchase a pumpkin for themselves may do so at the market check-out.  Please remember to dress your child according to the weather-we will be going rain or shine-rubber boots are recommended. We will be leaving the school at about 9:30 after a quick snack and washroom break. We will be returning to the school by about 12:00 in time for lunch.

Sister Catherine Donnelly School is currently collecting non-perishable food items for our We Scare Hunger Food Drive. We would appreciate any donations you can offer.  There will be a pizza party awarded to the class with the most donations.

What Have We Been Up To?

We have been working on learning classroom routines, school expectations, how to tidy up, recognizing and writing our names (SKs are starting to work on writing their last names), simple patterning games, and songs/poems with actions.  We have practiced two fire drills and a lockdown drill. Last week, we participated in our first whole school Good News Assembly as well as our first school mass with Father Larry. Our first few weeks of Star Students have been doing an excellent job of leading class prayers, songs, line-ups and jobs.  September and October are very busy months!

There are lots of other things happening in October. The SKs will begin bringing their reading folders home this week (JKs will start in mid-January), Thanksgiving Monday on October 14, we will have our first visit from the Rosary Apostolate on the 16th, there is a Professional Activity Day on Monday, October 21, we will celebrate Halloween on the 31st by wearing Black and Orange (no costumes please) to school, we will also participate in our SCD Halloween Dance that day, and our kindergarten class will be having a Pyjama Day on Friday, November 1st. Phew!

Winter is Coming…

Please label ALL outdoor clothing.  At home, please have your child dress themselves and start to practice the order of how to dress for winter-snow pants first, then boots, then coat, then hat, and last-mittens!  Several of our students stand helplessly with arms/legs outstretched waiting for us to dress them at all three recess times each day. We will help with zippers if needed, but, they need to be able to independently dress themselves.

Help your child practice putting their hat inside their coat sleeves when they take it off (keeps them from getting lost and decreases the chance of spreading head lice). We have small baskets above our coat hooks for them to keep their mittens in.

-If you have not already done so, please be sure to fill in all school information forms on the School-day website.

Library day is Friday. Please help your child remember to return their book on Friday so that they are able to select another.  Our classroom schedule is now posted on the website.

-Remember that lunch orders (pizza/pasta) are now on the School-day website.  The last day for lunch orders is this Friday, October 11.  Late orders will not be accepted.  Lunch Lady has to be ordered from their website, separate from the school.

-We are ready to get out hands messy! We are already enjoying donations of play dough for our classroom.  I have posted a copy of the Playdough note/schedule on the website. Thank you to everyone who signed up in advance at our Open House!

Thank you again for all that you do (and all that you have done) to help make your children’s transition into the new school year a smooth one. We really appreciate all of your support. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend celebrating with your families.  We are grateful for the opportunity to spend time with your children every day!
